magentas and won't work without them.
Sometimes some liquid detergent (dish soap) on a soft cloth is good for
diffusing static charge on the case. That or a drier sheet.

Do you hear the distortion the same on AM, USB, and LSB? This might give you
an idea in case the distortion originates in one of the detectors
(demodulators).
