Arthur,
Check the 25 volt DC input from the power supply board to the VCO. If that
voltage is low the VCO doesn’t have the range it needs to tune the 10 and 15
meter bands. If your power supply board is the older type with the dc to dc
converter, check the core on the transformer to make sure
I have a Drake R7 that sometimes displays an instability on the higher
frequency bands when I first turn it on. On the 21 and 28 MHz bands the
frequency reads as 16xxx kHz or 32xxx kHz, and continually increases, as if the
radio is slowly counting something. The lower frequency ranges act
I have no experience with the R7 but some experience with AGC loops in
general. It is VERY difficult to design a good AGC and many radios get it
wrong. For example, designing it for the user's eyes (vs ears) means
paying too much attention to the S-meter indication. Using the loop
feedback
Have had issues with the R7 AGC in fast mode in that the AGC would go
into a low frequency oscillation excited by noise. Looking at the AGC
line showed a triangular waveform. This caused distortion on AM and SSB
signals. This problem went away when the RF gain control was turned
Wow, nice detective work Paul! I've had correspondence with John too, but it
was mostly about the AGC alignment and the subject of the fast AGC never came
up. I would agree with the assessment that it is useless, the poppy-ness on
noise alone is just to annoying to put up with, and manual
Thanks Paul for sharing this!
I found the fast AGC on the R7 useless, too. I will try the proposed mod
on my R7.

for aligning the AGC?

Neither. From the AUX-7 manual:

My R7 has suddenly developed the following problem: The frequency and frequency
read-out on many of the bands is 2 MHz too low. So, for example, when I switch
to the 80-meter band, and the receiver should be tuned to, say, 3650 kHz, it
instead reads as 1650 kHz, and the received is in fact
Hi to all:
Can the Drake R7 receiver transceive with the Drake T-4XC transmitter?
Or, would I have to use the mute button on the R7 before transmitting?

You can't 'transceive' with the pair, as there is no Premixer (PTO +
BAND) signal in the R-7. The 7 Line sends the PTO signal back and forth
for transceive.
You CAN use the pair in SEPARATE by using the ANT and MUTE cables to
connect the two, and depress the MUTE button on the R-7.
I see a R7 listed on Ebayhad what is listed as a FCC moda
dimmer control added below bandswitch knob. Description states it dims
panel lights ( I would assume vfo dial meter).
Is this something Drake did at factory to R7's ( never saw one
before),or is it a mod someone did after they
Hi Paul,
This does not look like Drake-original to me at all. Look at the text
which is not even well aligned...

I currently own two of the 'FCC-spec' R7s. As built by Drake.

Does anyone happen to have a schematic of this IF buffer board?
