Shoot, don't feel bad. I just aligned my filters last week after having
and using the radio for two years and found I hadn't touched the
alignment at all. No readings were written down for the VFO settings. I
don't know what I was doing. As you say, the radio worked pretty well
anyway.
73,
I don't know if anybody else on the reflector does
this, but everytime I turn my K2 on, and use if on a
DX-ped hour after hour, I sit and look at this itty
bitty radio, and am just amazed at how something so
small, can be so
good! anybody else do this?
Yes. This is normal behavior.
On a K2, how critical is the adjustment of L34? This is an adjustment that
peaks the IF amplifier. The manual states a peak should be found one turn
of the slug down from the top however mine seams to be peaking right at the
top of the can. Actually, I cannot go through the peak as it just
Charlie:
I have done this 2 days ago and the same thing happened to me (I am still on

L34 is on top of the can for the peak signal/noise.
I cannot give you any technical explanation for this but I am sure some of
the guys on the Reflector will.
I will be liestening, that is for

Here is a technique I used to adjust L34 - While performing the I.F.

should work). I had meant to put this hint on the reflector long ago and

And if you wind the slug out a bit further?
It's not normally necessary to stop winding just because the slug is
level with the top of the can.
Or possibly you've got a too high value capacitor across the coil?

Hi,
I'm looking to purchase a K1-4 Four-Band 5W CW Xcvr with the KAT1 Internal
ATU for the K1 installed.
Should you have one that is excess for your needs, I promise to give it a
good home, raise it properly, and take it to all the best QRP places!
Thanks for the use of the bandwidth,

I received a lot of answers but Rick, KE0X, has what seems to me to be the best
explanation on how to set L34. I just tried it and it seems to work. I want
to revisit setting the AGC now but I can see exactly what Rich is talking
about. Here is what he recommends:

I have for sale a very good working KAF2 audio filter/clock for the K2. The
unit comes with connectors and hardware to install the it. The only issue is
that I broke the 1/2 standoff used to install the KAF2. I made one using two
3/16 standoffs which worked fine. This item is available from
As at least one person noted, the AGC makes it difficult to adjust L34, or
make any adjustment in which you are peaking a signal. The AGC is
automatically twiddling the RF gain control up and down constantly as you
work. It's not that noise desenses the AGC, but that the AGC cannot tell

When i installed the kxv60 i did not have the atu installed. After a broken
diode every thing tested ok. atu was installed. And tested ok. I did not
recheck the kxv60. when pressing tune to tx while aligning power on xv144 i
saw that the power from k2 could only reach something like 0.2 mW.
Hi all
K2 5219 just completed, everything working, just 1 missing trimmer

If I press PRE/ATT and AGC together to switch off AGC this works but
I then don't get any signals (or just very low level) playing with
the RF and AF controls?? any
Hi
Yes I ran into this about a year ago. The problem is the KAT2 does not have
a three state output driver for the RF detector as the KPA100 and KAT100
have and the KAT2 is loading the RF detect line. Changing R6 on the KAT2 to
a higher value will solve the problem. I used 470 ohms rather than

Hi Bob - Lost Sidetone is fairly common.
First: Please check that you do have the Sidetone Level turned up (Menu
StLEditturn vfo knob to set number around 020MenuMenu)
Chances are that your level is already adequate and increasing it won't
result in your hearing it!

I am just starting the RF board so I still have plenty of time...I'm
a little puzzled about choice of mic.
Is there a difference between the Proset K2 on the Elecraft site and
the Proset Plus on the Heil site?
How does it compare to the Handi Mic (and which model to select?)?

At the risk of sounding like I'm criticizing the K2, I'd like to say that
the menues are awkward to set. Unless I have a cheat-sheet of some kind, I
can't find my way through them. I suppose this isn't such a big deal
because most of the menue settings are a set once and forget or at least a
There is a big difference in the many mics sold by Heil and even more in
those manufactured by Heil and sold only by specific transceiver

Ok, I want to adjust my filters using Spectrogram!
But first, I have to bypass the DSP. And that is not working out. Either the
instructions in the DSP manual are not clear or I am having a brain cramp ...or
a combination of both.
How do I get to the DSP menu to bypass it (turn it off)?
As an option, check out the Nifty Quick Reference Guide and Mini-manual. I
don't have their K2 manual but I have one for my TH-F6 ht.

After looking at the help pages, I don't see anything that would allow
configuring the radio menus such as filter bandwidth settings etc. I can't
run the program with my K2 yet because I have yet to build the 100w
amp/serial interface. Are you sure this lets you configure the menus?
Thanks
Rich
Don't know as I don't have a K2 but it should allow all facilities that
Elecraft included in the CAT commands. Check your manual.

Michael,
The ATU automatically cuts the power when using tune. You can prevent
that by setting the ATU menu to CALS or CALP. Remember to set it back
to AUTO when you're done calibrating the xv144.

Well, I am selling my K2 and K2 stuff, it's all on Ebay, I put the DSP,

You hit it right on.

the power up to about 0.57mW from the 0.2. Replacing R6 with a 470 Ohm on
the KAT2 did the rest. Now low power controle seems to be ok and the first

Yes Steve, don't be alarmed. It is totally normal, you are not in
danger, only good will happen, although this is unknown to those devoid
of Elecraft radios. Since my learning curve on new radios is about one

Hi all,
I have been doing CW nets on 40 meters for a few weeks with a lot of
success. I went down to 80 meters just now to try an 80 meter cw net, and I
am hearing all these NC contest stations. One guy sounds like a buzzsaw. I
try to tune him in but the signal quality is awlful. So I go up 5
Probably totally unrelated, but I once heard something like that (using a
different radio) that was caused by the noise blanker being on and picking
up a lot of impulse noise on the band. It was most noticed on strong signals

That can also be caused by having a strong signal from a BC band station in
the neighborhood. The noise blanker, in order to do it's thing, MUST turn
the I.F. signal path off an on at a fairly high rate of speed (once per
pulse of noise).
That process turns it into a mixer, just looking for
Good Evening,
Two very good nets this evening. Twenty meters was good but forty
meters was great. More than once there was a wall of sound. Hail signs
helped get a few out of the chaos. CZ and SS for Ken and Tom was how they
got through earlier than others. The two bands were not all
