Apologies for this completely OT question, but I know I'll get some good

Agreed Chrs, I hope the K3 includes an auto character spacing keying option.
I've always used external keyers with my K2 for that reason.
One other thing, re band data output. I hope the K3 puts out 4 bit band
data, i.e. compatable with most contest loggng programs, FT1000mp etc.

I'm just catching up reading this thread and have some questions:
What is the best way to feed a 1/2 wave or 5/8 wave vertical at ground

L match and would perhaps obviate the need for a feedline choke? What would
Hi, our clubs K2/100 has the same problem with high curent at full power on

I did this small mod to power the KAT100 from my K2/100, to simplify wiring
when operating portable. I added a miniature slide switch across D10 on the
main K2 board. Closing the slideswitch makes the original K2 12V socket
into an aux 12V output. A short cable (4) with a power plug on each
John, our club's K2/100 does the same thing - high current on topband, but
it seems normal on all other bands. I mentioned it on here some months
back, and received some useful suggestions to try, but I never did find
anything wrong as such, or a cure for that matter.

Hi Bill, I recently built a KAT100 and 4:1 BL1 also (3 evenings too!). I
have a 160/80/60m trap dipole in ANT1 and a 40m doublet via the balun in ANT
2 for the other bands. This gives me instant QSY on ten bands. Like you,
by coincidence, I find the balun gets very hot on 40m. What I plan

Interesting Earl, the non exhaustive tests I've done indicate that it is not
due to magnetic fields. But if indeed that is the case, there must be a
relatively easy, if perhaps not elegant, way of significantly improving
this.
Has anyone else investigated this?

Geoffrey, as I recall from tests I've done in the past, it doesn't appear to
be power related, and is not related to the KPA100. I'm not sure though if
that completely rules out your suggestion?
BTW, the K2/100 is usually putting out about 50W when driving my tube
linear, so is just ticking
Thanks for further comments. Yes the internal counter cable is removed. I
should also have made clear that my tests have been on unkeyed transmitted
carrier, and have been with both the 100W pa on and off by appropriate
setting of the power control. I have recently checked the pa bias
Thank you for the responses and I'm pleased to get some discussion going on
this subject on the reflector. Phase noise has been brought up before, but
not discussed in detail. As I said I've had personal emails about this so I
know I'm not on my own here.
I should point out that my comments
Just a quick note to say thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions.
I'm affraid I haven't yet got to the bottom of this (excessive current at
full power on topband on our club's K2).
I could not find anything wrong component/construction wise, but for now I
have too many other things
So far I haven't found anything wrong as such on #3764:
The LPF components appear fine (value and condition), and check out ok with
an MFJ analyser for SWR on receive.
T1 and T2 and associated components appear ok. One thing; C83 is 1000pF,
not 1200pF as per circuit. However I tried

G3VTT suggested the transformers, but they have the correct number of turns,
including the po/swr sensor T4.

Stewart - thanks - worth shecking the LPF components.
Don - I don't understand why the BPF alignment would cause this problem?

Thanks Philip, I will check the current of the base K2. The PA is in the
same box. No tuner involved. I would expect lack of drive would result in
low output and hence current? I don't understand your point re the pa
screws, surely that would cause overheating of the transistors on all
Oops, I should have said thanks to Gary too - his reply somehow ended up in
the wrong folder here.
The LPF and components around T1 T2 seem to be the place to look.

I've successfully made the following mods to two K2/100's, (both latest
spec/upgrades). The QSK mods are based on previous posts on the Elecraft
reflector.
QSK. Firstly, on the control board, cut the short track between U6 pin 17
(RC2 /MUTE) and the junction of C23/R17. Solder a 220k resistor

Is there any plans to provide an 'Autospace', probably menu selected,

This is a new one on me, as is the recent suggestion of increasing C72 from
10 to 100n on the KPA100.
I get QSK clicks regardless of whether the PA is enabled or not, so I
haven't tried the C72 mod. I have the KAF2 audio filter, no DSP. I have
1M0 in parallel with R17 (3M3) to speed up the
Jim, from memory typical DMM's do not have low capacitance ranges. I have a
LCR type portable DMM that has more useful ranges, but is not so good for
voltage and current measurements. It's lowest capacitance range is 200pF
full scale so it's possible to measure C's in the pF region. Over
Richard, the K2 QSK is not fast. There is a documented mod to speed it up:
reduce the value of R17 (3M3) in the audio muting circuit, typically by
placing a 1M0 in parallel with it. This gives fast QSK but is not as smooth
- it can be a bit clicky in the headphones on the fastest menu
While on the subject of the keyer wish list, an Auto interCharacter Spacing
option would be great; I never use the K2 internal keyer due to it not
having ACS.
