Kevin, VK5KS has met exactly the same problem with the encoder, as I did.
Even flush, flush cutting of the leads did not solve the problem due to
a nearly imperceptibly slight bend of the control board.
The solution is to slide down an extremely thin sheet of plastic
(1 x1 inch) down between the fr
Hello,
Due to an unforeseen delay I am now going to assemble my KDSP2 unit.
The kit was delivered on 25. February 2014 and is marked: Revision A.1. June
2003.
Included is an Errata sheet KDSP2 Manual Errata, marked : February 5, 2007 (
Rev A3 for Manual Rev A1)

My Question is : Are there
K2 Audio Distortion.
My otherwise flawless K2 # 7359 is found to have
serious audio distortion problems on received and transmitted signals on 40
meter.
The problem appears as soon as I go above 7171 kHz. On 7182 the problem makes
SSB contacts impossible
Lower frequencies do not suffer. Why ?
During heavy lightning in the evening I switched all antennas to ground.
Next morning I forgot and started to transmit into a grounded antenna (sic)
It appears the transmitter is now gone dead. Admission: I murdered it myself.
Where do I start to look. - When "transmitting" into a dummy load the R
K2 # 7359 w/ built-in battery.
If I turn on my K2 in the battery state the sensitivity is unexpectedly low. (
with 12.1 volts ). One S-unit local noise.
As soon as I apply the normal charging voltage from the supply (with 13,7volts
) it
suddenly jumps to normal sensitivity. Four S-units local n
RE. DON,
It's truly fantastic what this man is doing.
I often send him a question late in the evening, knowing
that it will be deep in the night for Don.
But honestly -- he is back when I wake up next morning here
close to Copenhagen, Denmark.
I ask myself. Does that man never sleep ?
It's really
Thanks for snappy reply to KAT2 troubles.
Started on your presumption that connection to dummy load was unstable or non
exsisting. It wasn't.
Was about to take ATU apart for a rewinding of T1 but --
quickly decided to check the K2 in its original condition.
Disconnected J7 and J8 + removed ATU fro

On the KAT2 a number of toroid cores are prepared and installed.
L1 and L2 are to be prepared with an extremely exact length of solid hookup
wire.
The assembly instruction mentions that toroid cores "remain somewhat loose"
within the winding.
That is to put it mildly. They act like a baby's ratt
I have just concluded assembling a K2. Within a few weeks I will have an ATU
installed too.
I wonder if this transceiver could work through a Palomar TX 5300 PA.?
The TX 5300, a solid state RF-amplifier, will put out a 500 watts PEP if fed by
10 watts of excitation.

I wonder if Ross has checked the possible short-circuits on the back of the
encoder.
This was a mystery for me building a K2, and only remedied by placing a sheet
of sturdy plastic on the back of the encoder.
