Paul, Is the FTDI adapter identifying as a COM port when it is plugged in?  You can check using Device Manager - open Ports and unplug the adapter - which COM port goes away?  Then plug it back in and observe which COM port is assigned. Windows no longer adds the FTDI drivers, you must downl

Mark, All I can tell you is that the KX2/KX3 and XG3 will respond to input levels (on the tip) from 3.3 volts up to the maximum RS-232 voltage.  The output (ring) from the XG2 is an FET drain connected to a drain resistor which connects to +9 volts.  I don't know about the KX2 or KX3. 73, Do
