Good morning all,
Thanks to help from Jon (ea2sn), this problem is resolved. Elecraft use
inverted signals for the RS232 connection, so I re-configured the ftdi
device using the ft_prog utility (under windows), and then the
connection worked as expected.
Thanks for all your comments!

I have not looked at the KXSER cable in the amp manual, but I am
assuming it is the same as that shown in the back of the XG3 manual.
You can download that manual to check - I know that one works.

Is the FTDI adapter identifying as a COM port when it is plugged in?
You can check using Device Manager - open Ports and unplug the adapter -

Good evening,
I am trying to find a wiring layout for the kxusb cable. I have the
wiring diagram for the kxser cable (from the amp manual), and have tried
using an FTDI adaptor with this layout. Unfortunately the software
reports that the KX3 is not responding.
Have any of you gone down this
The cable shown in the XG3 manual can be ordered from Elecraft as the
KXSER cable. Or it is easy to build your own if you have the proper
connectors. The KXUSB has the same pinout at the KX2/KX3/XG3 end, but
plugs into a USB port instead of a serial port.

Is the same cable as you would use with the Elecraft XG3, take a look at
the end of the XG3 manual:

Mark,
All I can tell you is that the KX2/KX3 and XG3 will respond to input
levels (on the tip) from 3.3 volts up to the maximum RS-232 voltage.
The output (ring) from the XG2 is an FET drain connected to a drain
resistor which connects to +9 volts. I don't know about the KX2 or KX3.

HI, can you confirm that the KXUSB uses TTL signal levels rather than
standard RS232 levels? I got an extra one with my PX3 and repurposed it to
talk to a GPSDO that requires TTL serial levels and it seems to work fine.
I just put a 3.5mm TRS jack on the GPSDO.

I believe you are close. The plug is not the issue. The RX and TX RS232 signals
are separated on the KXUSB plug. One on tip, other on ring.
The ICOM has both signals on the tip.

The ICOM has both signals on the tip. So a short jumper combining the tip and

Barry,
If the Icom jack is mono, then I think the answer is NO.
The tip of the KUSB is TXD and the ring is RXD. Both are necessary for
RS-232 communications.
If I recall, the Icom uses a special interface that is not RS-232
compatible.

Thanks to some helpful hints from several in the group, I found the solution to

- Select

There is no substitute for the KUSB within the Elecraft product line.
