Yep, got it. Thanks for your patience!

Doug,
Please read this whole post. If you have questions about any part of
it, please ask.
A Hi Cur message does not mean that the PA transistors are in danger.
All it means is that the current draw is greater than what is set in CAL
CUR.
Set CAL CUR to 3.5 for most operation, and all
I was out this morning trying some antenna configurations at the park, ten
different setups, one one of them gave me a HI CUR error. It was on 20 meters
with 10 watts and with the current limit set at 2.5 amps, left over from when I
was working on the radio a few days ago. The SWR was 1.2 into
Thanks for snappy reply to KAT2 troubles.
Started on your presumption that connection to dummy load was unstable or non
exsisting. It wasn't.
Was about to take ATU apart for a rewinding of T1 but --
quickly decided to check the K2 in its original condition.

Hans,
You will have to remove the connector from P6 - the K2 still thinks the
KAT2 is connected.
If you installed all 10 pins as instructed, it will be tight. Try
prying it up bit by bit with a small screwdriver.
The 320 ohms on the collectors of Q7 and Q8 indicate that the PA
transistors
Have just added a KSB2 to K2 s/n 6424, testing with an MH2 mic on 40M
produced good signal reports. SSBA =2 SSBC = 2-1. However, am getting Hi
Cur ( Cal Cur = 3.5 ) at anything above 8W. Reducing SSBA to 1 produces
insufficient audio. By contrast, CW on same band can push 15 watts without
To elaborate, operating on 40M produces Hi Cur with power set above 8W.
Operating on 20M does not produce Hi Cur even with power set to 15W.
Setting AGC to FAST on 40M allows power to 15W without Hi Cur alarm. ???

Hi,
my K2 (#4271) had a HI CUR problem. While all other bands were fine, I got
a HI CUR error message on 80m, and output was down to 5 W.
I checked and rewound the coils of the low pass filter (L16, L17) and
touched up the solder joints of the capacitors C190, C191, C192. No
joy.
But the
Daniel,
It is not common to find a bad capacitor, but indeed it does happen.
In situations where something like that is expected, I usually do a
sweep of the LPF to reveal the approximate filter cutoff frequency. A
bad component in the LPF will show up readily using that technique (but

Hi,
I worked a little bit of the SSB contest this weekend. I noticed last
night I received the HI CUR warning a couple of times. The antenna is a
40m delta loop. I have checked the SWR and it never gets above 2:1 on
the entire band. I also use the internal ATU to get it down to 1:1 when
Dear folks,
I'm wondering if this is a bug, or perhaps a known feature of the
K2. Comments appreciated.
The following observations are made with the Max current set to 3.5
A. The K2 is running into a DL1 dummy load, directly connected by a
male-male BNC adapter. The KAT2 is not
Oliver,
High Current coupled with low power output is normally an indication of
a problem with the Low Pass Filter or with T4. The first thing to check
is the Low Pass Filter. Check the capacitor values for the 20/30 meter
(and 80 meter) low pass and count (and recount) the turns on the
How are you measuring those voltages? In any case, it looks like the driver
is not working. You will have installed a nylon standoff on it, I would look
for a short around that area.

Just to close this thread in case anyone was wondering about it, I
installed the KPA100UPKT today and it solved the HI CUR on 30m problem.
The K2 now draws less than 1.7 A on 30m with 100 W tx into dummy load
compared to 4.1 A before. What a nice change. My thanks to Don and the

I just noticed I'm getting a Hi Cur message only on 30m.
The set up:
- K2/100 into dummy load (KAT100 disconnected)
- Power set to 100 W
- CAL CUR set to 3.50 A
- When CAL CUR is 4.10 A, current drawn on 30m levels out at 4.02 A
- When I drop to 85 to 90 W, 30m draws just under 3.50 A
- All

You must
Mike,
First, count the number of turns on L4, L5 and L6 in the KPA100 - count the
turns that go through the center of the core rather than the outside. An
extra turn on these windings would produce the Hi-cur on 30 meters.
How old is your KPA100? If the kit was ordered mid-2005, then you may
