Gary,
Regarding the mic Z, you can use any mic, high or low Z.
I am using a D104 with my K3, and as you know conventional wisdom says they
want extremely high Z. Use what mic you have and use TX EQ to get it to sound
good.

Not only SSB. I have overshoot on CW.
Adjust your power to e.g. to 22W and wait a while.
With the first mark, the power shoot high
but comes at once down to preset value of 22W.
Instantly following mark starts OK.
You have to wait for about 15 seconds to see it fully again.

This problem appears to be rig-specific. I just duplicated his test using
three wattmeters in series, together with a Bird 4273 RF sample. The sample
feeds a Tektronix SC504 oscilloscope. My wattmeters are the Alpha 4510,
LP-100, and Array PowerMaster.

I don't have the elegant equipment he describes, but taking the output
of the K3 to a dummy load (50.1 + j0) and looking at it on an old HP
1740A scope, I see no overshoot on either CW or on SSB using an Elecraft

This jack accommodates an electret or dynamic
mic. Use MAIN:MIC SEL to select the rear panel
mic (RP). Tap 1 to turn on Low or High mic gain
range. Tap 2 to turn bias on/off (see pg. 28 for
recommendations based on mic type).

Yes the ref to 3 is a long overdue edit. I have used 7 to work with my Heil
HM12 in front panel. Was unaware it doesn't work for rear jack. CM500 plugged
in there, no need.

After returning from Elecraft for repair and updating my K3 (1087) will
reset it's Mic gain to 1 and Compression to zero.
I backed up the radio's configuration when I get it back and reloading
it does not solve the problem, which occurs at boot up more times then not.
This is a barefoot setup
Since you use DXLab I'd suggest checking Commander's "User-defined Controls"
configuration. Is there a slider for Mic gain? If so, is it configured to
"Initialize radio"?
In Commander click "Help" then select "sliders" for more info.

element, which is known to be kind of low in output compared to most other
dynamic mics. It does work beautifully and the audio reports hav

MON is just Tx. For my CM500 I have RP.L BIAS for mic setting, gain is

That sounds like you have your MIC SEL menu set for "H" - try tapping
the "1" button to change it to "L" so you can set your mic gain higher
(and gives you more range). I don't know if it will help your noise,
but it would explain the difference between your setting of 9 and the

The CM500 IS hot. I've never noticed, or had complaints, of any background

You can determine if it's caused by RFI very easily. Try transmitting

Plug in a key or mic and try transmitting without the computer connected.

Thanks Victor, you called it. Started the K3 and it started with the
correct mic controls. Booted the computer and started DXLab modules and
the mic gain reverted to 1. Now I know where to look. Will start by
removing the second radio, which installed when I sent the K3 back to
Elecraft, and go
Why take out the 2nd radio? The problem is in the configuration of the
software on the computer.

IC-7300 but I will take a look at the controls first. I don't remember

Do you have the mic menu parameter set to FP-H for higher mic gain? We
have two ranges, FP-L for the MH2 and many mics and FP-H for mics like
the Heil HC4/5 that are -8 dB lower in signal than standard.
