With SSB mic level adjusted to the max level (ALC to
the max)the average power measured on external meter
is only 4 Watts with distorted audio (power output set
at 110W). If I use external compressor the average
power is still only 4 Watts. This is done with CMP
gain at zero. This is not normal.
Hmmm.
If I have my K3 set to 5.0 watts, my external watter shows ~3.5 watts
average and ~4.0 watts peak. Changing the pitch of my voice (as
expected) also changes the power. Those measurements are with a long
HELLO.
At 100watts set point, PEP = ~ 70watts and Ave = ~ 60 watts.
No, it's not
and watt meter set-up.

Oh, but this IS normal. You need a peak reading wattmeter. If anyone
ever uses an average reading power meter to try to figure out the talk
power of a radio, I guarantee you that they are putting out crude. Even
with the K3 compressor set up more than it should, your peak to average
ratio is
Wow. Then with my K3/10 (still on order) I'll have an average power
in the milliwatts. Too bad I didn't order the KPA3 before the price
went up.
Does this situation affect the K3's output capability on PSK31?

Hallo Mark,
Are you sure that something else might not be wrong or configured
incorrectly? Are you sure that your measurement of the power levels is
correct?
There may be some interaction between the WMTR xxx and the TXG VCE
configurations, leading to low SSB output, but I really, really am

N8LP's LP-100 has a function for evaluating
Peak to Average performance of speech processors. SSB
isn/t of much interest to me until 10 meters comes back
so I haven't played with this mode in the LP-100. Larry
has a K3 on order and maybe he will compare the K3
speech processor to others
