If you're running AM, 500W PEP is what you get with
But I agree, the Elecraft site does not show 1.54 as being available.

Well shoot, I'v been using mine at 300 watts to save the finals, no more. I've
been driving it with 18 watts out of the K3. What drive power do you recommend?
I use it on both CW & SSB. Don't run digital and use my Collins 32V1 and 75A4
on AM.

I did it again. I meant to send this to the group but sent it to Jack

Hey Richard;
I’m glad you are enjoying our creation. The KPA500 is truly a fine piece of
hardware and firmware
that continues to evolve. The most recent firmware version is V1.54, releasing
in mid December.
Others have answered many of your questions, let me give my shot at a few. I

Rick,
I think you are trying to "outwit" the designers.
One thing I can say is that the KPA500 is quite robust and
conservatively rated. One or more of the Field Testers was asked to run
an RTTY contest at "full out" power, and I know one who ran the whole
weekend contest at 700 watts and no
Your KPA500 is designed to produce 500 W at the antenna connector and is
most efficient there. You can watch the PA temp [or put the fans in
automatic and listen to them do it for you]. Field testers were
encouraged to run it at full scale, and they did.
The amplifier was designed for max
Richard,
The FET amplifier is adjusted for a given power output. You have no
PI Net adjustments with the FET amplifier. It is tweaked to have maximum
efficiency at somewhere near the full rated output. It is all up to the
designer. What you will see is an increase in efficiency as you

Hi Phil,
I'll give you my opinion and I'll also assume that you are talking about
your home shack and not a KPA500 that is operated remotely. I don't even use
STBY. I have the menu set for the KPA500 to go into OPER on power up. When I
don't want to use the KPA500 I just hit the power button to

Thanks to the crooks at Enron, our differential rate is currently $0.36
per kWh, and that's year round.

I have two questions (slightly related) about the KPA500.
Question 1: Assuming that there is no transmitted signal at all, is there any
difference in whether a KPA500 is switched into OPER mode or STBY? Does OPER
mode, even though the KPA500 is not actually being used, draw more power are
As a potential future buyer of the KPA500, I have a few questions, for those
who actually own it:
What have you found to be the actual output power, on a dummy load using a good
power meter other than the internal one.
Is the maximum output the same on all modes (CW/AM/FM etc.)?
Is the

Same as what the LED's say when the highest one just comes on.

Thanks for the comments on my questions on the KPA500 amp.
To expand on some of the comments: I have no reason to believe the amp's meter
isn't accurate. Since I haven't seen one yet, it appears to me the meter is of
the LED type, which for me is a bit difficult to read. I find it easier to

I don't think you can over drive it as there is a overdrive fault and
output leds change color to let you know how much power you are putting
out. Mine is packed for J6 so I don't recall if it is green, yellow,
red. I set the radio output so the amp puts out 500w. An extra 100
watts
To all,
I've now had my KPA500 for almost three weeks. I really love it -- especially
how well it interfaces to the K3 and makes changing bands so easy. I used it
yesterday to make about 120 QSOs in the DL-DX RTTY contest. I was running it
at 400 watts instead of a full 500 just to be
