I just received a KAF2 audio filter kit for my K2 and I am considering a few
mods when I build it, to increase the bandwidth somewhat, and to increase the
gain. My use of the K2 is mostly for VHF weak signal work with transverters,
often outdoors with lots of background noise (surf, crickets !)

cascaded filters are better, particularly the DSP straight sided filter
responses. To optimize the IF filters, I would encourage all to use
Spectrogram (or something equal) and a wideand noise generator ( or

My K2 had the DSP.
I programmed the DSP in a way that it tracked the IF filter settings. I
had that both in CW (4 settings) and SSB.
This way the DSP worked great as a combo with the IF filtering. More or
less as in the K3.
The DSP auto notch worked reasonable well.
Never got the NR configure
For serious contest use of the K2 on 160, I found that the extra skirt
depth afforded by the DSP was extremely useful when running as opposed to
search and pounce. On the other hand the easy rolloff of audio off the
center frequency was useful. Like some others what I really wanted was
BOTH.

I don't know if there is a significant difference between the 2 crystals
or not, but I suspect that either will work.
The crystal is only for the Real Time Clock. Put one crystal in and
keep tabs on the time display for a few days. If it is off drastically,

is labeled S573 and the other is labeled S793. I don't think there are

I only have the KAF 2 filter, and have never heard the DSP, but I am very happy
with the KAF 2. If anything, position 2 boosts the cw signal, and I don't
find any ringing on the cw note. I never use the KAF2 on SSB . I consider the
KAF well worth the money, especially since I got it used at

quite interesting. I have obtain a new type of filter that did not cost me
anything. Now the KAF2 worked well for me, but I felt the BMF2 worked better.
I have not tried toeh KDSP2 yet (it is rather pricey) so I have
Idiom Press make a SCAF-based audio filter called the SCAF-1. It's a
low-pass filter with a variable upper cutoff frequency. It also operates
in real-time with no ringing. Recordings of the SCAF-1 in action are

One nice feature of the DSP for CW operation is the ability to open up
the filters for bands that seem to be dead or have little activity.
You set the crystal filter to its widest bandwidth and put the DSP in LP
(its widest setting). Activate the denoiser.
The band is quiet, background noise

I have for sale a KAF2. C19 has been padded with both fixed and a
variable capacitor so as to set the 32.768 KHz xtal to obtain precise
time. Battery still good , checks at 3.042 VDC.

dsp on ssb has left me at best luke warm. And I don't do that much ssb dxing
if I can help it. So don't consider ssb in the answer.
I just installed my KAF2 and recalibrated my K2,
then took it for a little spin - and worked Brad,
FO/N6JA in Tahiti, on 10104, at 0418Z.
