OK, I've done a few more tests with decidedly unexpected results. It
seems like my problem is definitely not video or USB related. I had
to move the machine to a different location, and don't have a long
enough wire to connect it to the network so I connected a monitor and

If you have USB legacy support enabled, that is probably a problem:
