Depending on the editor, they make a 'backup' of a file with a tilde ( ~ )
appended
to the file name.
You don't have to delete them, unless you are running low on space or you
are a little OCD :)

The ~ files are like the .bak files under MS-Windows.
It exists on all operating systems.

UBUNTU is a 'sub-flavor' of Debian. Yes, Debian is still around.
