Why not to use the ttf-dejavu fonts in default e17 theme ?
Like the others do: Debian, Ubuntu.
You can get more default languages(mine to).

because we have been using vera for a long time - and we already support
fontset

The peculiar thing is, when I changed over to ubuntu edgy recently from
SuSE 9.4, I went through the fonts looking for a nice one to use for my
day to day usage. Figuring there might have been a different set of
fonts installed, and one of them might be better than what I was using
in the past. I
