On the topic of a hybrid install.. on something with enough space (perhaps not a Mustang), how about a boring old 4x4 transfercase. Leave the ICE configuration alone. Attach your electric motor either directly, or via the driveshaft, to the front output of the transfer case. Leave it in 4-high
