Steve, I’m in NoVA too
We pay a $100 a year to register our EV, regardless of mileage. I forget the
numbers, but you’d have to drive a substantial amount to equal the gas tax. We
are being penalized, not incentivized.
I think a gas tax would incentivize people. Make it higher and higher, and a

I think there are a couple of factors at work here.
1. The laws implementing EV and gas-only pseudo hybrid license surcharges
are based on model legislation written by ALEC (American L

Doesn't that depend on how the road tax is calculated ? I don't know the
formula proposed in this case but it's easy to imagine a formula base on

- efficiency
- weight
When everything was powered by gas, the gas tax was generally fair. That

Here in VA we pay a fee if we have an EV. That doesn’t bother me too much as I
am willing to help pay for roads. BUT they also charge a fee for fuel efficient
vehicles, as they say they don’t pay their fair share. I live in northern VA
and we also have air pollution problems . So if I make less

I see your point, but I think that vehicle owners should pay in proportion
to the environmental harm they cause. The more environmental
This has been my proposal all along. Raise EV road use tax by X and
raise the gas drivers ENVIRONMENTAL USE tax by the same amount - X.

It already does, of course. But if they seriously want to transition to
100% EV sales by 2030 it does mean reduced fuel tax revenue as the active
ICEV population gradually declines..
IMO tha
I agree. But wouldn’t a gas tax basically accomplish this?

A road tax is just a fine for EV owners to punish them for not using
petroleum, and discourage motorists from switching to EVs. On the contrary,
if they actually want EVs (spoiler: they don't), they should waive as many
fees on them as possible.
IMO, the fair way to recover fuel tax revenue
I think Inslee is right. There's too much room for something to go wrong
with the tie to the road usage fee. Getting the first 50% of vehicles
switched from paying gas tax to road usage fee might be easy, but
getting over 75% might linger on for years and years.
