At risk of prolonging this agony further, I too have been unable to get a cd burn with my new Ver 7.0-2 install. I have an LG CED 8042B 4x4x24 IDE cd rw, which the install correctly identified. The install also faked some sort of IDE-SCSI translation so the system "thinks" this is a SCSI drive.

You would probably have more luck if you set your run-level down to 3 to inhibit kdm/xdm. Then you should be able to just "su" to whomever at the end of rc.local and "startx" . . . . or, perhaps better, set up a "startuser" script that is SUID to the desired user and have *that* do a startx.
