Christian, Sendmail and Postfix cannot and will not install and work on the same system at the same time. They fight one another. You will first have to uninstall Postfix altogether, and then install Sendmail. If you're running Mdk 7.2 I strongly suggest using sendmail-8.9.3-20 or sendmail-8.10.x

KDM gets it's list of windowmanagers from the files in /etc/X11/wmsession.d It sounds like you just need to make a new gnome entry in this directory. The format of these is pretty simple, just copy one of the others and change the name= and exec= lines to point to the new gnome installation.
