Sorry, I haven't had that problem... yet And... Thank you because now I won't try till some else tell us something. I finished tunning a 2.4.13 kernel for my MDK8.1 and I downloaded the NVIDIA drivers, but now I won't test them. I will stick with the XFREE provided drivers for the time being.

There's a --disable-gcc-checking (that's probly not the right syntax) you can add to './configure', but that warning is for RedHat's version of 2.96. Mandrakes 2.96 is not the same. I remember using the switch when I compiled mplayer. As I recall, there was a warning that basically said

as I understand it, 2.96 from redhat and 2.96 from mandrake share only the name,, they are different and mandrake's does not suffer from the faults of the redhat one.. it seems that the package is just looking for the version number, you need to remove the check for it from the script. There
