i810e gave some trouble as far as multiple sessions were required. It
didn't work at on 8.0 but works on 8.1 (one has to change XF86Config though)
without DRI.

hdparm is a great tool to control my IDE HD. I'm able
to set the spin down timeout, so the disk automatically
standby after 30 minutes.
But I have also 3 SCSI disks, one running at 1 and
not permanently used. Is there any other tool or kernel
patch available to control the spin down

time to check out software raid or strange binary only drivers.
