I've got mandrake 7.1 here (downloaded a couple of nights ago), should
i upgrade some rpms from this? I don't want to do a full upgrade yet,
since I've changed a *lot* of stuff on here.

Try checking the permissions on /dev/dsp . I was having problems with
esd and decided to verify the files in the dev package, and found that
most of them were wrong, with some being owned by users that hardly use
the system, for some reason.
