don't forget, too, that too many people buy the cats are neat and

Thanks, but I'm trying to get away from home visits altogether, although I
generally end up doing one informally anyway - I took Sapphire over to his
new mom's house for a trial visit to make sure he didn't freak out around
the kid or the (cat-friendly) dogs.
I'm practicing, as well as I can
Humm.. well, that's one option. Good luck (I will pray for your cats). I'm
sure you will have much higher adoption numbers than I do.

No need to pray for them, they assure me they are much happier this way than
they would be being killed.
You know I always liked this list because it was a place to share freely
without being attacked.I value that and I'd hope it would continue.

Hi Kelley,
I was surprised at how forgiving and positive you sounded when this adoption
didn't work out. I just read your link to the Boulder Humane Society's open
adoption program and now
I understand. What a great approach! I know of many pet-worthy people in
our area who
have really been
Now that I have read more of the topics... Whitey did this his first week
here... when I had him quarantined in the bathroom. As soon as he was able
to come into our room at night, he was happy. Of course, since then, we've
discovered he's a toe attacker, so he's now been booted out at night... it
yeah, that's me--keen powers of the obvious
seriously tho, i've always suspected that crying behavior in a new
environment is sort of like a sonar-thing, too the cat is trying to
locate themselves in time and space, and listening to hear where he is by
how his own voice bounces back
I must somehow record Tigger at bath time, you've never heard a noise like
he makes, LOL! Sonar indeed! Personally, I think it's kitty voo-doo, he's
casting some terrible spell that will render me harmless and save him from
the terrors of the sink!

well, it hasn't worked yet, so he'll need to try a lot harder!

Unfortunately your crowded little house probably made him feel more secure. He
will have been aware of the other cats and could even be crying to try and
communicate with the other cats and be distressed because they are not there.
He is obviously distressed and I feel like everyone else needs
You know I agree with you and I wish all adopters would go to the sometimes
great lengths that some of us do for our furbabies. The problem is that
whether or not we think it has not been long enough, SHE feels it has been
long enough. I think if he weren't so affectionate and sweet during the
He's suffering from separation anxiety. Even tho his person is there...when
she sleeps...she leaves him. Its not uncommon for animals who have suffered
a tramatic event (house burgler...fireabandonment) to go through
this..(sometimes just moving from one home to another can do it).
She is going to buy Feliway. I also found a local source of Rescue Remedy.
She is not willing to medicate him. I guess I can understand that (well,
not really, I have all kinds of cats on all kinds of meds) but it isn't a
physical problem, and I guess some people do not believe in medicating
She has not called me back. I have no idea what that means. Maybe he is
fine now. Maybe it was so bad she had to call in sick to work and she'll be
on my doorstep when I get home.

I finally called her back again. She says he did better last night. She is
going to give him until the end of the week and see how he does.

I think she is likely to give him the time she needs as long as she can
sleep at least a little.
And I am grumpy as heck when I get no sleep. I stayed with some friends of
mine years and years and years ago who had a newborn. I think that is when
I decided I didn't want children. Oh my LORD
if she has to, for her own health and safety, she can always get earplugs
and shut him out of her room til he gets the message. not the best
option, perhaps, but sleep-deprivation isn't a good way to begin a
relationship, either.

I would still want her to leave a light on somewhere near her bedroom.
Bathroom maybe, or even another bedroom.

Hi all,

Kelley,
Just by your brief explanation it sounds like this guy is confused and
scared. Since he's affectionate during the day, and you hinted that
she's not giving him attention at night, I'm guessing he's calling out
for reassurance. Do you remember me telling the list about Sophie

Nina,
he can sleep whereever he wants. She says he gets in bed with her for 20-30
minutes, then gets tired of that and gets out of bed and starts pacing and
crying and does that until 5 am.. It almost broke my heart.
She says she can't live without sleep forever, and I see her point. He

no one to PLAY with in the middle of the night at his new house, so of
course he wants to wake mommy up!

She has tried catnip. She really did try a bunch of different things before
calling me. I wish she had called a little sooner.
He didn't seem attached to anyone in particular. Sometimes he slept with
me. I haven't heard him so I am not sure. She says he is fine and a

Hi Kelley,
Is this cat neutered? If not, could it have something
to do with that? Also, does the cat have the run of
the house at night? If so, maybe he needs a smaller
space, like just the bedroom with the door closed and
with his food and litter box in there until he feels
safe, for a few

Kelley,
Are there any other pets in the household?
Also what do they (the woman the kitty) do just before she turns out
the light? Is he with her on the bed? Napping? Dozing? What happens
when she turns out the light? When she turns off her light, at that
point are ALL the lights in
But does he lie in bed with her while the light is on she is still
basically up? When does he start pacing relative to her turning off the
light going to sleep, or trying to?
