I would suggest that you use the notation commonly used for the
water-gong effect: Keep all the notes on the same line or space as
usual, and but upward- and downward-angled arrows above the "staff."

Yes, this annoying thing is part of 2007 (maybe 2006 too, I'm not
sure). The only way to eliminate those ghosts is to delete the
entire measure number region and the redefine it.

The problem does not occur with Finale 2006c, or 2005 for that
matter. And, as I said, it did not happen with 2007a or 2007b.
Deleting the measure number region and creating one from scratch left me
with the same problem.
I wish now I had stayed with 2007b!

Hi Darcy,
Well they come out the same size as a regular notehead, with a rectangular
shape. You can always bump them up a bit in Mass Edit, although the stems
will be longer and the noteheads will expand beyond the staff lines.
