I have always used the Playback Region: From: Leftmost Measure setting. I never
knew there was another option! But with a Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad,
horizontal scrolling is so easy that I think I'd still prefer that method to
spacebar-clicking a particular measure.

Not for me in Windows -- spacebar playback works as it always has, with
or without the playback window open.

Hi Aaron,
I never knew this feature existed!
I agree it would be sensible to at least allow the option for spacebar-click
playback to use Human Playback.
Meanwhile, Robert, you can use the Apply Human Playback plugin to write the HP
data into the file, so that playback with HP off sounds the s

Hi Darcy,
I'm guessing that Robert is talking about Spacebar-click playback. If
you hold down the spacebar and click a measure, playback will start
there, but without Human Playback. There's also Ctrl-spacebar scrubbing
playback, which lets you play back a section forwards or backwards as

Hi Robert,
I'm not quite understanding what you mean by "spacebar playback." You can start
and stop playback using the spacebar whenever the Playback Controls window is
open, and Human Playback works fine. (If screen clutter is an issue for you,
you can drag all but the edge of the window offsc
So I have been pursuing my issue of non-playback of pizz and arco
expressions with MakeMusic and finally came to understand that Human
Playback doesn't work with spacebar playback. Once I opened the playback
controls, I could hear the timbre changes.
I am a bit miffed by this. I guess Human Playba
Actually my legacy files (which use Smartsynth) play back fine in Fin12. I
am not picky about playback, and if it were up to me Makemusic would not
have expended one minute improving playback beyond Smartsynth (because it
has been at the expense of so much that I do care about). Doubtless many of
For playing back old files, I find it easiest to use the Setup Wizard to create
a new score exactly like my old one, and copy the entire contents over. This is
easier than trying to set up all the staves to play back properly in the old
document.

For this upgrade I followed your advice, Darcy, and manually reentered my
preferences in a clean default doc in Fin12a. Everything is working pretty
well, but my "pizz." mark is not being played back. (I removed Playback
Options from it, based on your prior message.) There is no change in timbre

Hi Robert,
You don't have to prebuild. HP automatically looks for expressions that have
the content "pizz." and/or "arco" and trigger the appropriate keyswitches.
You do need to be using the "KS" version of the Garritan instruments, but this
is automatic (via Setup Wizard) in any recent Finale
Is there any way to control what Human Playback does?

I don't have any of these prebuilt items in this file, because it is
upgraded from an earlier version. I have not been able to get it to work.
Human playback doesn't recognize them and the patch changes don't work.

Possibly I'm misunderstanding the problem, but I've just used the arco and
pizz expressions in "Technique Text" and it has worked ok.
This sounds too simple a solution and I suspect that this is not what you
mean, so apologies if this is the case.
Best wishes,
Lawrence

Hi Robert,
Human Playback catches and interprets "pizz." and "arco" expressions
automatically, provided they are NOT defined for playback (which overrides HP).
Cheers,

Anyway, can someone tell me how to change the Garritan sound of an
instrument? Specifically, I want to change from arco to pizz (and back).
The old way was to specify a patch change on an expression, but the
Garritan option is grayed out on the playback setup window, and specifying
the old GM patch
