In Mac OS X, the best way to install a new font is to double-click the
font.
I have successfully used free IPA fonts in OS X. I can't remember the
name now, but it was easy -- certainly much easier than creating
custom graphics! If the first font you downloaded doesn't work, try
another.
Some windows TTF's (a type called "naked TrueType" don't ask me why)
don't play well with some apps in OSX.

Not sure if you're on Mac or PC, but I think the issue is the same. Because a
non-unicode font is limited to 255 characters (actually less, for various
reasons), unicode fonts need to "map" the glyphs to different positions in the
font. Unicode has a much larger range (65535, I think) so
