Could someone elaborate on what is the problem and what is the solution?
I had the same error as the original poster so I looked in /usr/local for
something gmp. Grep found a gmp.h in /usr/local/include/ and so I used
sudo mv to put this in my home directory. I tried to build gcc4.4 in fink

Thanks for your response, Alexander; as you were writing I reconsulted the FAQ
question linked in Martin C's response. By following the suggestion therein
(and patiently repeated by yourself) to move the entire /usr/local directory, I
had success building gcc4.4.
Now that I have a spiffy Fink

I sent this once and got no reply. This failure is blocking me from
updating either HDF or netcdf, no certain which. If someone has a
solution, I would appreciate it.
