Good morning, all!
I received my FlexControl via FedEx yesterday and, of course, immediately
connected it. I first removed VSPmgr and assured all the virtual ports were
gone, then connected the FC and it grabbed COM7, as I expected it to do. I
did a reinstall of 2.2.2 so that I could tick the
I am learning more and more every day...but now it would be great to
know what you all are doing to Win XP to make it more friendly to the
Flex...I have learned that the Flex does not like the power yanked out

Hi Dave!
Welcome to the world of FlexRadio SdRs! Its an incredible experience (I
bought the first generation SDR-1000 as something to play with between the
end of basketball season and the start of baseball season and after a month
of play, I sold my two TT Orions and Icom 756Pro2).

I would think that if Neal couldn't fix it, nobody can. So, I am a little
hesitant to jump in here as I am far from being a guru. Nevertheless, I did
get my Flex Control working after having some VSP issues, so I will give it
a try.
I didn't have the same symptom you did but I did have problems
Hi Steve
Thanks for the compliment but its not so deserved!
Bill is seeing unusually high CPU utilization and I didn't see anything that
should be causing it.
He is running Kapersky A/V which is not the greatest for SdR but it was
working before so I am not thinking something would have
Start taskman and see which process is using CPU.

Personally I would start by using Process Explorer from SysInternals to drill
down to the offending
CPU hog. You can then look at handles and hooks in use to see where you have
a bottleneck.

AutoRuns is also excellent for looking at
I did that for a while and didn't see anything suspect. Bill had Pc Tools
installed which I generally do not endorse but I didn't see it eating away
processor time.

Did Task Explorer, Autoruns and turned off any service not needed. He is
using a wireless TCP connection but I didn't see anything unusual there.

Also, Process Explorer (Sysinternals again) will allow you to do a snapshot of
all activity. Just
make sure you remove all Filters before doing this. Run it for 15 mins and
then you can view it
offline on another machine. It will show you all registry, file, process and
network activity
Strange fruit indeed. Power management settings?

Another thought check base addresses and IRQ's for the Physical Serials
default is 2f8 and
3f8 irq 3 and 4 (in the days when you had the option to change them!) .
Perhaps a quick test to
disable those ports in the BIOS and see if that makes the virtual ones any more
responsive.

What I meant to say FIRST was
Even if the board does not have a physical serial port(s) on it, it may still
have headers on the
board to add them - and the bios may have them enabled. Then the rest of what

I checked those and bill had uninstalled the vIrtual comports. He does have
a four port serial card but I didn't see anything weird with them. I didn't
disable them though, that would have been a good test, I will try it next
time.

I have the same issue with my 5K but with mine its limited to 20m /40m with one
antenna.
So its some harmonic or multiple and for some reason it gets into the 5K.
I run an acom 2K so enough said about the amount of power.
I thought about the position of the 5K but I dont think even having it
Frank,
That definitely sounds like RF feedback. The most likely culprit is the
firewire cable. I had the same issue running my amp with my FLEX-5000A.
First, make certain that your PC is connected to the shack ground. After
all, it is better than half of the radio.

point I am making is that getting proper ground on all equipment in the

Thanks for all the help; the problem has been resolved with assistance from
Neal and Stu and others. The FlexControl is working perfectly and my CPU
utilization is down from ~60% to ~20%.
Nothing radical; just a good cleanup of the system.
