If you don't mind a little complication you can get what you want from a
voltage controlled amplifier, typically an audio amplifier IC whose volume
is controlled by a DC voltage. You rectify a sample of your audio, scale it
with a pot and apply it to control the gain. Depending on the componen

Guys, this is what AGC is FOR. Older radios that had AVC used it because
AGC did not work well. (ANL was just a clipper and a way of dealing with
impulse noise in an AM receiver, taking advantage of how clipping the peaks
greatly reduced the average power of the noise.)

The NB is not disabled, it is turned off. There is a significant
differencebetweenthe two. You can always turn it back on.

I can see the confusion when the release notes say " automatically
disabled". Perhaps saying they "default to off" would be clearer. Just
an observation.

Dunno. "Automatically disabled," makes perfect sense to me. And if one

The thread on NB in digital mode brought to mind a question about using
the NB in AM mode. When I turn on the NBs AM broadcast band signal are
distorted. There is also distortion when using AM and listening to SW
in other bands. Is this normal or is something being overloaded?

Hi Terry. I use my 5000A on the SWL bands all the time and the audio
quality is to die for ! It is really amazing at how nice it is over a nice
set of speakers. I have not encountered any distortion, regardless of how
strong the signals are coming in. I do not use a HB on HF, I'll have to tr

Thanks Brian
I don't normally use the NB on AM, in fact, I don't use the AM broadcast
band that much either, but I had the NB turned on for the 80m band
because of a new neighbour that has a plasma TV set. When I tuned into
the AM BC band I noticed the distortion which disappeared when I turn
Hi Gedas
Yes, the sound is very good, almost as good as my old tube Hallicrafters
Skyrider SX-28 receiver, built in 1940. :
I use a stereo Hi Fi amplifier with my 5000A and my 1500 and the audio
quality is very good indeed.
Brian's explanation about signal overload seems to be the proble
