Update:
I have downloaded PowerSDR 2.0.16, removed McAfee antivirus, loaded ESET
Nod32 antivirus (much kinder in terms of system overhead), and am trying to
trim my unneeded Windows 7 services. So far it has made a favorable
difference in cw transmission, however my computer is still doing some

Although this thread has been pretty well thrashed-- I gotta say--
I haven't done anything special with my computer, it runs anti-virus, I
have indexing running, logging, cw skimmer, yadayada, all running, and
my Flex 5K has no problems, no skips, no slow downs, no issue with

In my view time-critical digital modes like ALE and Pactor III is
another area where analog still has an advantage. I say this both on
theoretical grounds, and from my own experience running RMS and pilot
stations. Latency is critical for these modes, and digital radios that
use FIR filters hav

Here is the thing: Microsoft Windows was not intended to be a

The best free A/V I have found so far is Avira Free (www.avira.com). I have
put it on several machines and haven't noticed a performance drag with it
(yet).

What should be removed would make a good topic for the flex wiki.

Neal,
Have you done any evaluation or tests with the free Microsoft Security
Essentials package? I have not tried it on my Flex 1500's computer but
it seems to be kinder to a couple of older XP machines we have at home
vs. AVG. What Norton and Macafee do to computers is criminal.

Macafee is the second worst of a very bad category of programs for
'real-time' processing. Please uninstall it and either purchase ESET's Nod32
or try it without for a few days to see if it stops.
Norton is by far the worst.
For either one, after you have uninstalled and rebooted, go into the

techniques have been exhausted and you still can't get adequate performance out

I appreciate all of the good suggestions and this weekend I will try the
following:
1. Neal's suggestion: Turn off Windows Search in Windows 7 and modify the
Windows Update to "do not check all". It does seem as if another process is
periodically working and causing a delay in the cw processing.

Hello,
I am a Flex-5000A user who has never quite become comfortable using it on
cw. I am using it with a Dell Dimension E520 running Windows 7. It has 5
GB of RAM. I have tried using an external keyer (LogiKit CMOS-4) and
recently the internal keyer, but have audio pops, glitches and delays wh
