According to 'lpc stat all' all 5 of my printers are offline. I have
shutdown and restarted all the printers, they all print from other
computers. I have even rebooted my machine so lp would be completely
shutdown and restarted. No good. No errors in the lpd-errs.log file.
Any ideas?

It's all working fine now. Downloaded Putty and ran puttygen (v.0.53b), creating a new
key-pair. The other version of puttygen (v0.53) created a pair that didn't work. But
now winscp and putty are both using rsa and pageant. It works great.

I don't know of any way to do this in FreeBSD. As long as it's
unmounted though, it shouldn't be doing anything, so it should be
safe to just remove it from the chain.

I've been using some Zoom USB Voice modems here with NetBSD for a
while, and they've been working great. They're based on the Lucent
Venus CRM chip, I think. Basically, for USB modems, avoid anything
that doesn't say it has a controller. They seem to
