Reporting back after a few days with the patch. The connect and switching

ago (on another thread) that the BCE driver should be picking up this
NIC. The latest 6.1 stable does not panic with the NIC disabled in the BIOS.

You could try setting kern.hz="100" in /boot/loader.conf. It lowers system
overhead, especially on SMP systems.

I started experimenting with carp, in order to replace
freevrrpd stuff we are currently using.
I'm running quite recent version of RELENG_6 (compiled
this week).
I was able to configure carp ok, but for some odd reason the
interface goes down by itself shortly after it has been configured.
