Well after all it's not going to happen very soon, but as soon as 4NT is
far enough ahead of 4DOS and 4NT specific code is removed there may be a
possibility.

Needless to say 4DOS is compatible with the FreeDOS kernel.
I've used it for a long time under it and it's very stable.
I attach the license under which 4DOS is now distributed.

My experience is that 4DOS works with FreeDOS kernal except for the command

Sometimes, quite often, the command on the line when using the history is
not the one that gets excuted, rather the one prior to it. I've only had

From what you say, it comes as freeware without source. Therefore,
even if it might eventually come (I don't think so either) as a Third
Party utility, having no sources it cannot replace FreeCOM (which by
the way is also a quite good tool) (although I might be wrong, Jeremy,

This is not as improbable as it may seem (unlike what Bernd says). It
happened with 4OS2, well Matthias Paul already tried as you can see
from the forum at JPSoft.

Since no source code is available, this is not something that should
appear in the FreeDOS Base list, but it can be included in the Util
list. And I think it should!
I'll create an LSM for this on FreeDOS.org.

Everything will eventually be open-source, the question if whether we'll
live to see it or not ;-)

I think this would allow redistribution of 4DOS, IMHO. But personally,
I would ask permission as a courtesy to JPSoft for thier contribution
to free software, and maybe even plug thier win32 software briefly in
the redistribution package.

it talks about LFN support, but AFAIK this is implemented in VFAT, not
in MS-DOS kernel. At least my Win98 DOS (MS-DOS 7.10) can't see LFNs, so
unless the author has taken the shots on a Win9X DOS box, do you know
how is that he mentions and has screenshots of DOS with LFNs?

Hi Jim, and thanks for archiving 4DOS and for your news item on it!

CONFIG.SYS saved by the installer on uninstall and is not needed since the

I'd rather not modify the 4dos750.zip archive to eliminate the

Hallo Bart,

Indeed! 80% the same thing! No one can really invent a license anymore.
The two sections that are added can be found (in slightly edited form)
in the GPL. If this were a source license it would be a BSD-ish

Best use is from a clean win98 installation. You might need to copy
