It could be double insulated, like many powertools. My house was built in 1922,

My serial number is on a label which is applied over the spot where the
original number would have been. it looks to me like the original number
had rubbed off (common problem on these machines).

You can use the Apple System Profiler unde OS 9.x (and maybe earlier
OS's too). It will tell you the serial number of your Powerbook, in
the "System Profile" page, under "Product information". Comparing

Very good point, which I didn't see late last night! Could it be a problem
with 9.1 and would 9.0.4 solve it, since that is what I am using and having
no problems. I use the adapter at least twice a day, since it is three times
faster than my USB reader and it has never failed to see the card.

Well, I have checked and I "appear" to be a candidate for a
replacement but the rub is that I purchased my Wasllstreet used and
all the numbers on the label on the bottom of the case have rubbed
off. Surely, it must be available elesewhere ... .
