Geoffrey & Todd,

You can use the Apple System Profiler unde OS 9.x (and maybe earlier
OS's too). It will tell you the serial number of your Powerbook, in
the "System Profile" page, under "Product information". Comparing
the label on the bottom of my powerbook with what it reports, I see a
slight difference: the system profiler has a few extra characters at
the end. For example:

        System Profiler Reports: AB12345C-D67-ef89
        Powerbook Label Reads: AB12345CD67

I don't know which number the Apple website wants (I have a yo-yo
power adapter), but I suppose you can try both formats.

Of course, if the serial numbers had been changed or obliterated
BEFORE you bought the powerbook, you should hope that it hasn't been
reported as stolen property. You do still have your receipts, right?
<wink>

Apple's website states that factory refurbished hardware has a new
serial number assigned to it, so that may account for the new label
Todd reports seeing. Also, it is possible that the refurbished
serial numbers have not yet been added to Apple's database of
legitimate serial numbers. In either event, if your power supply is
of the model that Apple is recalling, they surely will replace it.
Call them. Because if they won't, after having announced a recall of
that model number (thereby admitting both defect and liability), and
if that powersupply starts a fire, then you'd have a winning lawsuit.
