Ibooks running with lids closed

2002-05-22 Thread JustinLee
Does anyone know if there's a hack (shareware or freeware) that allows you to connect the new iBooks to an external monitor and run them with the lid closed? I'm not looking for an extended desktop, just something that would allow me to have it closed and use it with an external

Noisy IBM Travelstar

2002-05-07 Thread JustinLee
Hi, I'm using an IBM Travelstar in my pismo. The model number on the drive is DJSA-230...and it's kind'a noisy (relative to what I'm used to of course). I notive the difference considerably when the drive spins down when I'm watching a dvd. Even if it's connected to a moniter and I'm across the

2002-05-07 Thread JustinLee
The DJSA-230 is a model 30GT - no liquid bearings. Ken That actually made me happy. I can have a quieter drive in this thing! WOOHOO! I'm looking at the 40GN models at OWC. I may just go for the 30GB and use the noisy one I have now as a backup drive in an external firewire case.

Re: Short answer to battery questions

2002-05-06 Thread JustinLee
Battery Reset 2.0 has nothing to do with battery conditioning, nor with battery 'memory'. Battery Reset only affects very specific PowerBooks and iBooks, and only affects these if they refuse to see the battery at all (showing a red 'x' on the menu bar). So is there something else that will

Fan in Pismo

2002-05-06 Thread JustinLee
I noticed something when I was putting a 128MB SODIMM I had laying around in my pismo. (firewire powerbook G3). There's a little fan right inside the vent on the left. I say I just noticed it because I've never heard any noise coming from that side of the machine, and I've put my finger near

Pismo Replacement Batteries

2002-05-05 Thread JustinLee
Does anyone know a good source for replacement batteries for my pismo? I get a little less than 3 hours on my battery now and I was wondering if I could get a new one that lasted longer. What are my choices and where should I look? How much do they usually cost? Do they have new types of

No it [orinico cards] is INcompatible with OSX, though some people have gotten them to work. So what cards would you suggest? Something not too expensive. Is there an advantage to getting an airport card (for my pismo) and using it with an access point other than the airport base station?

Re: orinoco

2002-04-29 Thread JustinLee
So what kind of base station (other than airport) would any of you suggest using with the orinico cards? Do the cards and the base stations not have to match? I want to use my pismo wirelessly and have my father be able to use his compaq laptop (I told him not to get it) wirelessly also.

Re: Lombard 333 doesn't play DVD's??

2002-04-29 Thread JustinLee
Okay, so in OS X in a pismo with a dvd drive...can I watch dvd's? I haven't tried because it's not with me this week (left it with a friend). Do I need that hacked version of dvd player? Thanks, Justin Hi List: just wanted to chime in here -- I have a Lombard 333/192 RAM/ 20 gig HD and

WOOPS! That was meant for Matt Reiff. Sorry!! Justin Hey, you didn't, by any chance, go to Stuyvesant High School did you? Justin Someone a while ago gave me a service manual for a firewire G3 PB. I checked the URL and it gave a link to apple's FTP site. Last I checked, then, file

Pismo video mirroring?

2002-04-24 Thread JustinLee
Does the vga port on the back of pismos work straight with a regular monitor? Or do you need an adaptor? Also, is it only for video mirroring? Or can you actually have an extended desktop. I apologize about my naïve questions about g-books. I'm just ordering one today and I haven't worked

Pismos booting firewire?

2002-04-22 Thread JustinLee
(sorry, the message that I'm replying to isn't quoted here because I accidentally deleted it) Would the machine run faster off of a 7200 rpm ATA-100 firewire drive (than when booted off of the internal 4200 RPM drive). I would think it would. Has anyone done this? Is there a significant

Concerning Pismos and iBooks

Hi, I just joined the list :-) Concerning Pismos and iBooks (366/466 clamshell models): A) What's the real max RAM? Someone on ebay said he put 1024MB of RAM in the Pismo 400 he's selling, while the apple spec database says the max is 512. And is the iBook's supposed max is 320...? B) I know
