Thank you Drew. I tried all your hints but Pismo doesn't make a start up sound. It goes straight to a grey screen with a small folder in the middle wich switches to a system icon and a question mark. What to do? That's strange. Some Macs when muted don't sound the startup chime... Don't know if

Hmm, two things come to mind... one is to make sure that jumpers on the 30GB drive are properly setup. For most drives, setting it up for cable select is good enough, and requires no jumpers to actually be set. The other is that by swapping the drives around like you did, confused the machine.

i attached a new fire wire Toshiba 30 GB hard disk to my Pismo 400 by placing it in a case firewire case from SITECOM. art.no CN-600. It didn't show up at the desk top. After taking the firewire plug in and out many times after eachother, it showed up. I formatted it and installed system 9. Fine.
