II, 8600 upgrade, and the PC are all talking just fine to each other.

I think you may need to manually set up ip addresses on each powerbook.
This is not difficult, but your original post leads to believe that you
may not agree. :)
On the OSX machine, go to System Preferences -> Network -> Ethernet ->
Configure and type in 192.168.1.1 for IP address and 255.255.
If I remember correctly you need to enable sharing in the file menu &
turn on file sharing in the file sharing control panel.
It has been a long time.

Try the crossover cable. I believe you can connect through firewire
ports (assuming that you have firewire on both machines).
