Hi Dark,
No, for voice work no one should have to pay $1,000. A decent
microphone would cost between $100 and $150. I suppose if someone
wants one cheaply they can get a reasonable microphone for $50, but as
with anything else the more you pay the better the equipment is.

Hi Tom.
Well frankly if a person wants to voice act they should buy a better mike,
and again your quite within reason of saying to someone who offers you a
recording "go away and reccord that on a better system"
Really, decent mikes aren't that expensive, not if every youtube jocky who
bangs
spend thousand
on expensive reccording systems.

Hi Dark,
I know, but one thing that bothers me is the amount of poor equipment
used by the amateur actors or actresses being considered. I've met a
few people who were fine voice actors for a project, but their
microphone was total crap allowing a lot of static and hiss into the
recording or there
Hi Bryan,
Well, that is always a factor. For a free project beggars can't be
choosers, but for commercial projects it is better to pay a
semi-professional for voice acting because good quality recording
equipment is very important for game development.
Cheers!

Hi Tom.
All very true, plus of course if you say needed other voiced monsters such
as mummies for which you didn't have the sfx it'd be fairly easy for actors
to contribute, for example all you'd need for a mummy is some flapping
cloth sound pluss a hwhispering breath.

Hi Dark,
Sure. I've of course heard your work and I imagine you would make a
great Dracula throwing taunts at the main character. If needed I could
run your voice through Goldwave or Audacity to give you a deeper voice
more like Christopher Lee which would rock.

Hi Tom.
Such was my point. With a castlevania game, I'd for instance be glad to
contribute acting of hopefully reasonable enough quality, and even if we
don't have composers well there are plenty of blind people mucking about
with sound (take a look at the offtopic room of audiogames.net).

Hi Scott,
Yeah, Swamp is definitely the model we should follow. It has turned
out pretty well for a game created mostly based on volunteer help. It
can work if we all pull together as people have for Swamp.
Cheers!

Hi Tom.
Well with spending money to hyer someone, fair enough if you like,
however you might have slightly missed my point about sounds. This wasn't
that "developers!" should be more creative about sounds, developers are
busy with code, it was that that is a job of sound designers!
Hi Dark,
Okay, you have a point that we audio game developers could do more to
custom create our own sounds, but unfortunately it requires a
creativity of a different sort. Something like breaking an onion to
make it sound like a cracking bone just is not something that would
occur to someone like
Hi ryan.
I've actually not heard the sound, it just struck me as a really good idea
and something sound designers should probably try more of.
Beware the Grue!
