One remote possibility is that you haven't set your hostname as an alias for
localhost in /etc/hosts.conf. I had this problem earlier with kde-3.1.5.

Weird. I just did a final retry with xfs and now it works. I didn't even
change anything in the config files, except uncommenting the fontpath line.

You didn't by any chance update gcc as well?
Anyway, the problem probably isn't KDE, but XFree. (you could try and see
whether startx works) Check through the XFree log (/var/log/XFree86.0.log).

You also might consider using --oneshot with emerge -u kdelibs, in order to

as (hd1), even though it is at /dev/hdc. However, you'll have to make sure
the mandrake kernel's root option points to the right drive and partition,
i.e. /dev/hdc*
