Another couple of things to do, Tom: 1.) Open a terminal window and do a 'free' command and see how badly you're swapping. When you see those results, you'll want to add memory and/or swap space. 2.) Bring up X, and then run 'xosview'. That may give you a visual display of how bad things are..
