Freedesktop and HTTPS redirection

I've recently noticed a lot of source downloads from freedesktop.org failing due to HTTP links being redirected to HTTPS. Does anyone know if this is a new policy for freedesktop.org? If so, we should just change all the package definitions to use HTTPS URLs.
