For video use the Creative Zen Vision W is worth it
for screen alone
even if it is mired in Microsoft's MTP. There is also
Archos, Wolverine
if you need heavy storage & bigger screen than "iPod +
video".

Mediamonkey unfortunately is Windows only. And yes, I use it to sync
and update my iPod.
I use Juice as my podcatcher and Mediamonkey is set to automatically
add new tracks from it's download folders.

The way I've been using it though - podcasts and audiobooks to replace it I
