Thane,
Tried this idea. From the route given, no option visible for either Copy
System files or Make System Disk. Suspect a Dell "customized" install of
WinME. LOL!
No problem anyway anymore! Was finally able to boot to dos with a tweaked
(de-featured!) systeim floppy for WinME and I did get
Hmm, right click from within My Computer. I'll try that. I forgot this one.
Not a huge problem anymore. Got owner's permission to waste the HD if
necessary and start from scratch. LOL!

Really? Do tell. Not in the version of ME I see on this machine. Tried
last night from the ms/dos prompt. No go. And the way the ME banner pops
up, very hard to get to Safe Mode.

Checked the format command in the ms/dos window and the /s switch is missing.
Even the SYS command in the ms/dos window does not work.

Maybe I went to W2K too soon! I lost out on so much learning.

WinME should support just using "format a: /s" from the DOS prompt, right?

Yeah, we just had procurement buy the Dell compatible stuff and we used the
memory we already had to update other standard systems. I would update
the BIOS as well, can't hurt.

Ding! This does seem to be the case JRS.
Do you recall what your solution was?
2 days of research indicates that both Crucial and Kingston offer "dell
compatible" SDRAM. I'll leave it to the owner to decide. I'm still trying
to get the bios updated from A06 to All. Saw some pointers to an
UR correct. I believe.
Tried 1 of all my 3x pairs of DIMMs and NONE of them will play.
Know the bios is A06. Do have latest bios=A11.
Maybe it will un-lock this glitch.
If I can built a bootable FD with the new bios, I may still get lucky.
I know this is a "transitional" problem.
I will learn.
Jim,
Oddly, I tried my Crucial DIMM pair first. Failed hard as I described. I use
the Crucial pair 1st on these "fixes" because they usually work. Not this time.
May be OK, but I have a 4100 that fails on 3 pair of PC133 SDRAM DIMMS.
I'll read the link in a bit. Perhaps there is a pearl (of wis

Nope, but I will today! Did not cross my mindDOH!
But, from what JRS shared, I may be dead anyway, unless I can disable SPD
checking in bios.
(but I will at least test the 2d DIMM slot with the DELL DIMM anyway..)
Another confirmation of why I build my own PC's from scratch. LOL!!

Have you tried the new DIMM by itself? If it doesn't work, then the
machine requires proprietary RAM. If it does work, add the original
DIMM in the second slot and see what happens.
