I received the following message from Cheryl Banks, I am sending my reply
to the list because she might not be the only one who wondered about my
choices.
So, Rita, what WERE the books you kept? We are ALWAYS looking for good
Israel books for children. Perhaps you could put them on HaSafran?
Hi, Folks.
Indeed, I am writing a biography of Sydney Taylor. I do have access to
some unpublished photos of her, but what I do not have is permission to
distribute these. I think the suggestion below is an excellent one.
This reference series has a picture of Taylor, and I believe there is

Hi,
I agree with Karen and thanks for bringing up the issue. Sitting on the
other side of the planet, I am in the same situation. Although I am not
working in a school, our community centre works closely with the school
schedule. The school is in session during the week of the convention,
Right, I'd like to echo Karen's concerns about timing and sensitivity to
school librarians. In addition, the AJL conference this year coincides
exactly with CAJE's day school educators' workshop at St. John's University
in Queens. We are a small world, and it would be good to coordinate.
There is a glamorous head-shot of Sydney Taylor in More Junior Authors put
out by the Wilson Company in 1963. I'm going to scan it with the
biographical information for Elaine.

To all --
As CoChair of AJL 05 I am sensitive to the issues involved. I don't know
the genesis of the decision to begin conventions on the third Sunday
(which is also Father's Day), but here are some pieces I've been told:
Holding it earlier would impact school teaching and the run-up
I personally find this discussion perplexing. For more than twenty years I
have missed almost every Fathers' Day with my family because it uncannily
coincided with AJL Convention.
When I asked (a number of years ago) why, davka, our Convention is held the
third weekend in June, I was told, In
The discussion seem to be centered around the timing of the convention. I
echo the concerns and suggest that the organization poll the membership and
find the time that is mutually acceptable and enables most people to
attend. I would also like to voice another concern. The conventions are
Dear colleagues,
Since the topic of timing and cost has come up, I wanted to make one
additional point.
I agree with Phil that the timing of conferences can be problematic. I also
agree with Eliezer that cost is a significant factor in attending AJL
conventions, especially for those who
Has anyone viewed the movie, The Jew, by Tom Azulay? This film is
done in Portuguese with English subtitles, and concerns events in
Portugal during the period of the Spanish Inquisition.
If you've seen this film, do you consider it appropriate for high
school age viewing? Any graphic violence?
Hi:
As National Convention Co-Chair, I can add another reason that the
minhag has been to have the meeting in mid to late June -- the ALA
convention. One primary goal is to NOT overlap with ALA, and so we look
at those dates first. To my knowledge, it was never to accommodate SSC
librarians, of
Eli:
In our council meeting, we have suggested that a few core cities, ones
easily and more economically accessed by our members, be the location of
our conventions. This might solve your concerns.

Dear colleagues,
I'm in the process of developing criteria for my boss (the Director of
Education) to evaluate my work as a synagogue librarian. Since she's not
aware of what I do, apart from the job description, I want to develop a
checklist for her. Before I re-invent the wheel, does anyone
Dear HaSafranites,
I have a friend who was born in New Mexico and recently discovered that she
may be descended from a Spanish Jewish woman (a converso, I assume--or is
it conversa?). I know there are novels out there with the hidden Jew
theme. I remember reading one, but it was set in

As a veteran AJL convention attendee with similar difficulties regarding
the dates, I know the subject has been addressed in the past, but
perhaps it needs to be looked at again, especially since there are many
more day schools both at the elementary and high school levels. I hope

Not be labor Charyl's point, I would merely point out that that when I was
AJL president (more than 20 years ago) I suggested that conventions be kept
to one of two cities and that a national convention committee be incharge
of programming, rather than have everything fall on the local
As Cheryl Banks notes, since we consider the timing of ALA Annual
Conference before selecting dates for AJL Annual Convention because many
AJL members also regularly attend the former, we haven't always held AJL

Just a couple of thoughts to add to my original post, which I sent to Noreen
Wachs at AJL. She forwarded it to the list, for which I am grateful - I
wasn't sure if it was a private complaint, or something better suited for
general discussion.
I do see that the 4th sunday-wed in June intereferes

This discussion seems to be focused on the date of the convention. We
cannot forget the financial burden of the members who decide to go. Hotels
in downtown areas are very expensive. I was told that members want to be

I agree with Eliezer, that a less expensive hotel would be preferable, but

I think that is precisely why we have had such expensive hotels for the
most part and also because past surveys of members have strongly indicated
the desire to be _near_ everything (although Boca Raton in 1999 was a
notable exception). There's some relief this year as the Oakland Marriott
