Indeed, they are Christians who clothe themselves in the rituals and
trappings of Judaism as a tactic of deception.

Thanks, Elisheva. You sum up my feelings on the subject well. The book I
recommended is a serious scholarly study, and is not at all in the class of
some materials we collect here at HUC in the name of academic freedom

I don't know that it is censorship. No library, so far as I know,
prohibits ("censors") any publication but no library buys everything and
libraries use standards like accuracy, quality, and the purpose and clientele
of a particular library. Our library, for example, does collect a certain

I understand the difficulty we face, but what you are proposing is called
censorship. Once we start down that slippery slope I'm not sure where we
stop. (Do I, as an Orthodox Jew, refuse to circulate Gunther Plaut's
Chumash?) After all, if I censor what I don't like, why can't everyone else

True. Seems to me that Jewish Librarians need to take some sort of
stand. Otherwise why not give out anti-Semitic books and "let the reader

Over the years I have discovered that when it comes to academic studies of
any kind (This book was based on Rabbi Harris-Shapiro's doctoral
dissertation), the body of the work, and especially the notes and
bibliographies, are far more important than the conclusions. I saw this

Be aware that Messianic Judaism by Carol Harris-Shapiro, which was
recommended, gives a good picture of what messianics believe and
practice, but that it also concludes that there is no valid way to
exclude messianic Judaism from "authentic" Judaism. As I recall, this
conclusion was made clear in

I recommend Rabbi Tovia Singer. His group Outreach Judaism is an
international organization that
responds directly to the issues raised by missionaries and cults from a
Jewish perspective. He is well known, and has a radio show as well.

Jews for Judaism is good but I like Outreach Judaism best of all. I
have listened to Tovia Singer's tapes, read his material, and it's
great. Also, he is an exciting speaker and presenter, and has a special
presentation for teens on messianic Jewish recruitment.
