Is there any way to make:
a lag free public dedicated versus server that I can play on?

What gamead...@127001.org said is right, that is impolite at the very
least. Just let the Lobby system do it's thing, or make your servers
private.

Some of the ones out there are crappy, so I set up a dozen or so myself
to increase the chances that one has an empty slot.
I hope sourcemod gets reserved slots soon.

I think you are taking a lot of extra, unnecessary steps.
Do you want a private server, that plays Versus only maps? You can do
this by disabling Lobby connect, and having the map startup with a
Versus map.
Do you want a public server, but it only plays Versus maps? Too bad, the

Advertising a public server that will randomly error on 50% of the users out
there without warning is impolite to say the least. I'd only recommend this

steam community or similar, so that your users know what they're getting
I am a little confused because of your reply.
I don't necessarily want to dump people back to the lobby, but if thats
the way to have a versus only server, than thats what I will do. Also

matter if people get dropped. Also, does a
haha Wow. I don't get it, why? What's the benefit?
If you don't want lobby players on your server, there are much better
methods of doing that - and you can just set the startup map to be one
of the versus campaigns and your server will be joinable in Versus mode
that way.

Then dumped back to lobby they shall be, thanks for the info.

I am pretty sure that this always was and always will be a huge hack.
You aren't "making your server Versus only", you are hyst making it
error and dump the clients back to lobby because it tries to change to a
map that doesn't exist.
There is no way to make it Versus only.

My server still tries to go to non-versus maps when I do the following,
how do I make my servers versus only?
*6. Physically remove all non-versus maps* from the server in
/l4d/left4dead/maps/ including credits
7. Alter multiple map lists and make them identical to this:
maplist.txt:
l4d_vs_far
Blocking TCP will only prevent RCON access. Your server will continue to run
just fine.

Was the server installed using hldsupdatetool?
Did you close steam while updating?

John,
I just tried updating my server with the hldsupdatetool, and I still get the
same error message. I also restarted Steam, although, I am running a stand
alone version. What else do you think could be causing this?
Should I reinstall HLDS for Windows?
Thanks,
Daniel

The Steam client update which we just put out should fix this assert. It
shouldn't have caused any real trouble apart from the assert spew though.

Can I just block TCP at the firewall, or will that stop the server from

And because of the method Moderators use to kick, he was able to stay on by

We've never had a problem with the speed of their services. Even with a full
server downloading I still get full sync on my line (6mb) so I'm assuming
it's pretty decent.
