One great advantage of playing OFF the knee is it, that one will sit upright INSTEAD of leaning on the horn. If one rests the horn iON the knees as soon as there are more than 5 rest measures, the discomfort on left AND right hand will be much less. The handstrap, as useful it might seem, is

Be careful generalizing about sound on the leg vs. off the leg. You'll probably find, if you do a good double blind listening session, that it can depend on the type of horn, the room, the player - all kinds of stuff. Do what sounds the best! - Steve Mumford
