Hi Mikel, Jeff and I worked on this a while ago: http://learnosm.org/en/osm-data/ that could be revamped and enhanced. There is also at least one new QGIS plugin to get OSM data. I have not tried it yet but it would be nice to integrate if it works well as the current default one has some issues. I
