Would you consider using a Linux image as an engine or service machine to zip and unzip the necessary files? There are already free tools there, and Linux will talk to z/VM fairly freely. -- .~.Robert P. Nix Mayo Foundation /V\RO-OE-5-55 200 First Street SW

3590 tape drive support in zLinux/zVM?

2008-01-15 Thread Collinson.Shannon
This is cross-posted on the linux-390 and ibmvm listservs... Is there a manual or webpage somewhere that references all the types of hardware that will work under various versions of zLinux and zVM? Or could someone tell me where I could confirm that a Magstar 3590 model E11 standalone

Support for 3590 tape drives was added to VM in version 2. Looking at model E11 there were no upgrades required for VM. I don't know of any manual that lists what hardware is supported by which level of VM. However, it is easy to search the IBM website. I did a search on 3590 Opened the

In my 35 years of working on or around VM, I have never once had to take a stand alone dump of VM. In the past, the PSW RESTART dumps were sufficient. Now, you have that and the SNAPDUMP command. The only times that the stand alone dump tape got used was for the production TPF systems when I was

As Richard says, VM dumps SO rarely that buying a tape drive for that purpose is probably a waste of money. The only thing you absolutely need a tape drive for is to back up spool files and NSSes such as CMS and GCS. SPXTAPE can't deal with non-tape devices.

And for those, you might look at VSSI's VTAPE product. It can use a virtual tape for SPXTAPE. It might be cheaper than a tape drive (+ controller + cables + maintenance contract). I don't know what size your system is, but the VSSI products are priced based on MSU. You can check their website
