There is a pdf2docbook utility from Cambridge Systems. It produces ugly,
ugly output (like most Docbook related things), but it's one way to
handle PDFs.

you download whole bookshelves, they come with bookshelf indexes which let
you search even multiple bookshelves pretty quickly.
